Agency Is Not The Same As Control
Burnout often brings a terrible feeling: I have no control.
Sometimes that feeling is accurate. You may not control the budget, the client, the restructuring, the market, the new software, the manager, the commute, or the meeting that should have been an email and somehow became three meetings.
But agency is not the same as control.
Control asks, “Can I determine the outcome?”
Agency asks, “Where can I still act?”
The Job Demands-Resources model helps explain why burnout rises when demands are high and resources are insufficient. Resources include support, autonomy, clarity, feedback, and the ability to influence one’s work.
You may not be able to redesign the entire system.
But you may be able to identify what resource is missing.
Clarity. Help. Time. Training. Authority. Recovery. A decision. A conversation. A deadline that is real rather than theatrical.
This is where duty, purpose, and self become practical.
Duty asks: what action is mine even here?
Purpose asks: why is that action worth taking?
Self asks: what resource do I need to act without breaking myself?
The answer may be an email asking for priorities. It may be admitting you do not understand the task. It may be declining something. It may be doing the boring thing you have been avoiding. It may be asking for help before resentment hardens.
Agency is often smaller than we want.
But small is not nothing.
And in a burned-out life, reclaiming one honest action can matter more than waiting for total control that may never arrive.
